The nail is the protective plate of the tip of the fingers and the toes. They provide protection to the fingers and serves as sensation enhancer to the fingers. Oral antifungal tablets like Terbinafine, with results visible within three to six months, and ltraconazole tablets will usually resolve a toenail infection.

Another treatment for nail fungus is the antifungal nail paint. This is a nail lacquer with amorolfine as the active ingredient. It is recommended if the infection is situated at the end of the toenail. Treatment with this may last from six months to 1 year. If all medications have failed, the last option would be the surgical removal of the nail. Surgery is indicated only if a great portion of the toenail is damaged and it is causing too much pain. Some case would require removal of the entire portion of the toenail, some instances it would require the removal of the involved portion of the nail only. The procedure is a minor operation done under local anesthetic. Following the removal of the affected nail, the doctor may advise the patient to continue with the antifungal drugs or apply antifungal creams to cure the remaining infection. Toenails are expected to grow back within twelve to eighteen months.

Toenail fungus can be avoided by practicing good hygiene like wearing clean and dry socks, using antifungal spray in the shoes and avoiding exposing the feet to surfaces that may be susceptible to fungal growth. The best treatment for toenail fungus is to avoid it ever happening.
